MEET THE ARTIST
Kristi Nelson is a self-taught artist whose work embodies the serene beauty of realism through the delicate medium of pastel. Growing up on a prairie farm, Kristi's artistic journey began in the rural landscapes of South Dakota, where the soft hues of the prairie and the vibrant life within it left an indelible mark on her creative vision.
Primarily known for her commissioned pet portraits, Kristi has honed her skill in capturing the unique essence of each animal she portrays. Her love for the softness of pastels allows her to bring a lifelike quality to her work, often so realistic that it is mistaken for photography. Beyond pastels, Kristi also explores various other mediums, reflecting her versatility and deep-seated passion for artistic expression.
Influenced by the creative spirit of her father, who inspired her with his craftsmanship and design skills, Kristi’s art is a testament to her roots. She is deeply inspired by fellow South Dakota artists, such as Mary Groth, Harvey Dunn, and Jon Crane, whose work echoes the softness and subtlety she admires.
Kristi's artistic endeavors extend beyond her canvases. Her background in teaching and interior design demonstrates her commitment to creativity in multiple forms. This includes designing engaging lessons and curating beautiful living spaces, all which feed into her artistic sensibility.
With a heart full of love for animals and an appreciation for rustic, everyday beauty, Kristi seamlessly incorporates the charm of prairie scenery, nature, and its inhabitants into her art. Her greatest satisfaction comes from the joyful reactions of her clients when they see their beloved pets immortalized with such precision and tenderness.
Kristi's work continues to celebrate the quiet magnificence of the natural world and the profound connection between people and their pets, forever capturing moments of beauty that resonate deeply with those who view them.
