Caring for Your Pastel Artwork

Pastels are made with pure pigments, similar to those used in fine oil paints, but without binders that can break down over time. This is what makes pastels a unique and enduring medium. However, they do require special care and handling to ensure their longevity.

Handling & Framing

A light fixative is used to help prevent smudging, but the painting is still fragile until it’s properly framed. Always handle it by the edges and avoid touching the surface directly.

Hiring a Professional Framer: Choose a framer experienced with pastels. Make sure they do not add additional fixative, as it can alter the color and texture of the artwork. If you prefer a frameless look, request invisible spacers to prevent the painting from touching the glass.

Framing Yourself: Use a frame with glass to protect against smudging and dust. Ensure that the painting doesn’t come into direct contact with the glass. Archival materials and acid-free backing are recommended to preserve its quality.

To keep your pastel artwork looking vibrant:
Avoid direct sunlight, which can cause fading and create humidity inside the frame, potentially leading to moisture damage.
Place it in a stable, humidity-controlled environment to prevent warping or mildew.

Taking these steps will ensure that your pastel artwork remains as captivating and fresh as the day it was created.
